Pre-Writing Guideline for your Essay

Essay writing has become a regular part of academic education starting from early middle school to post-grad and doctorate. Improving in the essays gives us an opportunity to not only improve upon our grades but prepare for our further studies that rely upon scholarly information and lengthy submissions. 

Many students who fail to improve their essay writing and the essay process to keep up with the advanced subject matter and essays, often find themselves troubled by essays in higher education. ‘Help me write my essay,’ they might end up asking others when they find the essays challenging.

Most people fail to successfully write these advanced essays, not out of a lack of writing prowess but due to faulty or a crude essay process. They either spend too much time writing the essay or don’t spend much time at all in the planning phase.

The prewriting phase is crucial to the essay and without it, you won’t be able to shepherd your rambling ideas and information during the essay phase. The prewriting phase can vary from person to person but the usual prewriting process will include the following steps:

  1. Essay prompt

Read the essay prompt closely and scrutinize each word in it. The little time that you spend on the essay prompt will save you from the trouble of writing the wrong essay, wasting your effort, and ending up with a bad grade.

The prompt should be dissected for two things: the subject matter and the task word. The subject matter can be narrowed down by noticing the parameters set for it in the prompt. For the task words, you will need to know the various task words that correspond to different writing types. Such as analytical writing (analyze, compare, classify, etc), evaluative writing (justify, evaluate, assess, etc.), descriptive writing (describe, show, explain, etc. ), and critical writing (critically evaluate, critically analyze, synthesize, etc.).

Before concluding the task, an essay writer should also make sure that you have noted down the essay guidelines, including the formatting requirements and any other special requirements. 

  1. Brainstorming

It is best to do the brainstorming before the research part as this allows you to come up with your own ideas and points that will go on to make your essay unique. 

Brainstorming can be done using one or many brainstorming techniques, such as mind-mapping, listing, freewriting, and journaling. Each of these techniques allows you to think about various points and connections that you can use and develop in the essay.

If the topic is fairly new to you then you should do some background research (not in-depth research) into the subject matter. The best source to do this is using a specialized encyclopedia entry that explores the background in-depth. 

  1. Research

The research for advanced academic essays needs to be through scholarly sources only. It includes research papers and academic articles, written by academics and scholars. You can find these sources through online databases. It will do you good to accustom yourself with research using a single database at first, and moving onto others later on. This will help you find the relevant sources fast.

Make sure that you read through the abstract of the papers and check their contents to see if they include the information that you are looking for. Furthermore, you should use the reading styles of skimming and scanning to go through the content fast to get an overview, before reading it closely. 

Taking notes and writing summaries either on the same sources or separately is important as you will use these notes in your essay writing. Otherwise, you will have to reread the sources. 

  1. Outline

Using the notes from the research and the brainstorming maps and points you should make the essay outline. The outline will include all the main points that you want to expand on in the essay.
