Requirements
Here's a summary of responsibilities:
Under the direction and supervision of the Lead Psychological Services Provider, and in close coordination with the Athlete Recovery Program (ARP) and Sports Medicine clinic leadership, the Temporary Psychological Services Provider will deliver psychological services to Team USA athletes participating in ARP at the Colorado Springs Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. The provider will support athletes across the recovery continuum, from acute injury or illness through rehabilitation, reintegration, and return to sport and performance.
The provider will function as an integrated member of the multidisciplinary care team, collaborating closely with physical therapists, physicians, athletic trainers, dietitians, strength and conditioning professionals, sport scientists, mental performance practitioners, National Governing Body (NGB) personnel, and other members of the athlete’s support network. Care will address the psychological impact of injury and illness; adherence and engagement in rehabilitation; pain, sleep, mood, anxiety, identity, confidence, and fear of reinjury; psychological readiness; and other factors that influence health, well-being, and sustainable return to performance.
The provider is clinically competent, continuously maintains appropriate professional licensure, and practices within the scope of that licensure and all applicable laws and ethical standards. The provider must demonstrate experience serving elite and diverse athlete populations, strong interdisciplinary communication, sound clinical judgment, and timely, high-quality documentation. This is a temporary, primarily on-site position based in Colorado Springs.
Here's how you'll have an impact:
Provide evidence-based individual and group psychological services to athletes enrolled in or supported by ARP, including assessment, treatment planning, brief and ongoing intervention, crisis response, referral, and follow-up within professional scope and program parameters.
Assess and address psychological factors that may affect recovery and return to performance, including adjustment to injury or illness, grief and loss, mood and anxiety symptoms, pain-related distress, sleep disruption, trauma responses, changes in athletic identity, loss of confidence, fear of reinjury, motivation, rehabilitation adherence, and transition concerns.
Participate in interdisciplinary intake, case consultation, care planning, progress review, discharge planning, and return-to-performance discussions. Translate psychological findings into practical, athlete-centered recommendations while safeguarding protected health information and maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries.
Collaborate closely with ARP providers and the broader Sports Medicine and Sport Performance teams to develop and implement integrated care plans that support rehabilitation engagement, psychological readiness, athlete well-being, and sustainable performance outcomes.
Monitor clinical progress, risk, barriers to care, and readiness throughout rehabilitation. Use clinical interview, behavioral observation, validated measures, and other appropriate data to inform care, communicate trends, and adjust interventions.
Support psychologically informed rehabilitation practices, including goal setting, coping and emotion-regulation skills, acceptance-based strategies, imagery, attentional control, confidence rebuilding, communication, graded exposure, and preparation for return to training and competition.
Provide timely crisis assessment and intervention, safety planning, consultation, and coordination of a higher level of care when indicated. Follow USOPC mental health emergency action plans and applicable reporting requirements.
Coordinate internal and external referrals and facilitate continuity of care for athletes requiring services beyond the scope, duration, location, or capacity of the temporary ARP assignment.
With appropriate authorization and in accordance with privacy laws, communicate with athletes, USOPC Sports Medicine and Sports Performance providers, NGB health and performance personnel, coaches, and other designated stakeholders regarding care coordination, functional recommendations, and return-to-performance planning.
Deliver education and consultation to athletes and relevant staff on psychological responses to injury and illness, effective support during rehabilitation, communication, psychological readiness, and reintegration into training and competition.
Document all athlete encounters, assessments, care plans, consultations, referrals, and other required information in the electronic medical record accurately, completely, and within established timelines.
Contribute to ARP program development, quality improvement, and outcomes evaluation by identifying service gaps, recommending workflows and resources, and supporting responsible collection and interpretation of program data.
Support Psychological Services and ARP coverage for designated training sessions, camps, meetings, or events at the Colorado Springs OPTC and, when assigned, at other USOPC- or NGB-sponsored activities.
Maintain compliance with professional ethics, applicable federal and state laws, USOPC policies, IOC/IPC requirements, USADA and WADA requirements, the U.S. Center for SafeSport Code, and the Olympic & Paralympic Code.
Contribute to a healthy, safe, inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive environment for Olympic and Paralympic athletes and colleagues. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
